abstract = "As protected areas of sustainable use, Environmental Protection
Areas (APAs) allow urban areas presence. Urban spaces are usually
under dynamic changes, entailing problems related to planning land
cover. This paper aims to identify urban patterns presence and
evolution for 1984, 1991 and 2000, in the Environmental Protection
Area of Mananciais do Rio Para{\'{\i}}ba do Sul (APA - MRPS).
This is an important conservation unit since it was create to
guarantee water supply for 15 million people in the states of Rio
de Janeiro and S{\~a}o Paulo. A supervised approach, based in
cellular spaces e data mining techniques is proposed to
investigate the dynamics of the urban patterns. As the APA-MRPS is
spatially disjoined, each unit was studied separately. Each unit
showed different urban patterns and dynamics, represented by its
urban trajectories, and because of that, for monitoring and
planning purposes, the APA-MRPS cannot be considered as a single
and homogeneous unit. The temporal analysis of the urban patterns
also showed that, as expected, the creation of this protected area
in 1982 had almost no influence over the intense urban process in
the region. The conservation unit creation alone is not enough to
achieve the purpose of water resources protection. To reach the
sustainable land use of protected areas, it is essential to gather
qualified information about land use and its evolution, seeking to
monitor and assess the conservation planning. Remote sensing data
and spatial classification techniques constitute useful tools to
support water conservation tasks in protection areas.",
